FDA Approves Record-Breaking Covid Vaccine Ahead of Christmas Surge

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine’s approval on Friday night. The approval follows clinical trials that involved 44,000 participants.

An independent panel of experts voted 17-4 to grant an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the vaccine. An initial shipment of 2.9 million doses will reach the most vulnerable American citizens next week. (Fox News)

The FDA’s approval was initially expected Saturday. However, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows reportedly told FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn on Friday to submit his resignation if the agency did not approve the vaccine by the end of the day, according to a Washington Post report.

Hahn in a statement provided to Fox News denied these claims, however, saying the report was “an untrue representation of the phone call with the Chief of Staff.

“The FDA was encouraged to continue working expeditiously on Pfizer-BioNTech’s EUA request. FDA is committed to issuing this authorization quickly, as we noted in our statement this morning,” per the statement.

The FDA advisory panel on Thursday was charged with voting on the following question: “Based on the totality of scientific evidence available, do the benefits of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine outweigh its risk for use in individuals 16 years of age and older?”

Before Covid-19, years of research and clinical trials bogged down vaccine development, which often dragged on for over a decade before the public reaped any benefits. Thanks to the Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed, Pfizer was one of three pharmaceutical corporations that produced a safe and effective coronavirus vaccine in record time.
