When leftist media outlets admit something not usually beneficial to their narrative, it is time to take notice. In this case, it is the far-left, ‘progressive’ magazine, The Nation. As I have been noting for a while – thanks, in part to President Trump’s maximum pressure campaign, the Iranian terror regime is under the worst pressure it has been under in decades.
And now, even The Nation is acknowledging it.
Of course, the ‘progressive’ platform blames a lot of the regime’s woes on Covid and spins it as a humanitarian crisis (which it certainly is), but that doesn’t change the reality; the Iranian regime is “nearing collapse.”
Ahmad Jalalpour, an Iranian journalist in Iran, notes in The Nation, the three primary factors that have brought the regime to its knees: “Tens of millions are reeling under an unholy trinity of the pandemic, U.S. sanctions, and government misrule.”
Jalapour adds how Trump’s sanctions are pushing the regime over the edge:
Given the endemic problems of governance and the tightening of the sanctions under the new US special representative for Iran, Elliott Abrams—not to mention the devastating toll on the country’s medical community—a consensus is forming among medical professionals that the country is fast approaching a catastrophe.
Iran is primarily an oil-exporting country. Technically, the medical system is exempted from US sanctions, better known as the “maximum pressure campaign.” However, by targeting the country’s financial and energy sectors, the US sanctions have set off an economic depression that could be worse than any in Iran’s modern history.
And that is exactly the point of Trump’s strategy. To force the regime to stop spending billions of dollars on its illicit weapons and missile programs, regional imperial ambitions, and terror efforts, and spend it on its people instead.
It is worth noting that despite difficulties created by the sanctions, U.S. sanctions do not prohibit humanitarian assistance or medical sales to Iran. As Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in March:
The whole world should know that humanitarian assistance into Iran is wide open. It’s not sanctioned. We’re doing everything we can to facilitate both the humanitarian assistance moving in and to make sure the financial transactions connected to that can take place as well.
While the U.S. and Europe should make a point to facilitate and increase exempt humanitarian and medical sales to Iran, now is not the time to lessen sanctions or appease the Iranian Mullahs. Presumptive President-elect Joe Biden – also take note: Trump’s ‘Maximum Pressure’ is working. Don’t stop now.
