U.S. Border Patrol Reinforcing Mexico Border Wall With Razor Wire

President Trump’s infamous border wall with Mexico was never intended to be impenetrable. But as most military and security experts understand, barriers are all about obstructing and delaying. Barriers are designed to slow down intruders long enough for responding forces to react.

In this case, the barrier is the wall, and the reaction forces are the U.S. Border Patrol agents in the field. In order to aid in that delay, and increase reaction times, the Border Patrol is now adding coils of concertina razor wire to the tops of the newly built border wall in El Paso, Texas.

The wire is reportedly being added to the wall along a stretch of a now 30-foot barrier between El Paso’s downtown Paso del Norte Bridge and the Bridge of the Americas. This is considered a high illegal alien crossing zone.

According to American Military News (AMN), “the El Paso region has seen illegal crossings by single adults rise for six months straight.” AMN adds that:

Border Patrol’s El Paso Sector, which includes New Mexico, apprehended 7,347 adults in October, a number that has increased each month since April, when agents apprehended 1,568 adults in the sector.

Apprehensions of single adults more than doubled from October a year ago, when 2,784 adults were apprehended in El Paso sector.

With increased border security measures, illegal aliens have been taking greater risks to enter the U.S., and human traffickers and smugglers have also adapted their illicit methods. This includes using makeshift, camouflaged ladders hung by smugglers on the wall discovered earlier this year.

The U.S. Border Patrol is simply trying to reduce the flow and the dangers involved in crossing the border illegally. AMN reported that a spokesman for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the El Paso sector installed the razor wire “to dissuade individuals from scaling the border wall and to reduce the risk of injuries sustained from falling off the barrier.”

He added in an email:

It is an added obstacle. It also extends the time for agents to respond by adding to the amount of time it may take some who are entering illegally to disappear into the community.
